Biography:

Markey Robinson* was born in Belfast in 1918.  No circle or school of art can justly claim him as its own.  In a career spanning six decades, Markey never waivered as a maker of images and a breaker of molds.   His painting shows a debt to European expressionism,  but one which was paid in full by the emergence in time of his own inimitable style.  France and Spain, and in particular the Balaeric Islands, as well as the Irish countryside provided much of the inspiration for his land and sea scapes.  The people who passed in and out of his life provided the material for his sailors and clowns and the other colorful characters that make up a large part of his ouvre.  Markey lived and painted in Dublin for many years before returning to Belfast where he died in 1999.
